A recent interview conducted by Martelize Brink on RSG about retirement issues, drew attention to the factors one should take into account when selecting a place to live after assuming retirement.
In fact, many of our residents appear not to have made an entirely rational decision before deciding to invest in a unit. Many attest to the fact that they were immediately charmed by the park-like common property or the abundant birdlife or the balmy weather or the neat, well-planned, relatively inexpensive units or all of the aforementioned.
A quick internet search brought to light a number of key factors that one could have borne in mind before purchasing a unit - not necessarily in order of importance:
- Are the housing units affordable, i.e. purchase price, levies, cost of water and electricity, and property tax?
- Is the local cultural, political, or religious environment appealing?
- Is the environment safe?
- Is it easy to get out and exercise?
- Are transport and safe driving options available?
- Do conditions address elderly residents’ needs for health care, shopping, healthy food and social interaction?
- Does it provide easy access to relatives?
- Is an airport easily accessible?
- Is the climate pleasant?
