Our AGM was held on 19 November. More than 70 residents listened attentively to the Chairman's Report in which he pointed out that greatest single problem this year proved to be a water crisis that caught Bela-Bela in a state of unpreparedness.
What? No water? |
This matter was debated at some length. The meeting was informed that the causes were easy to identify. Firstly, the country is in the throes of the worst drought since 1982. Secondly, poor maintenance of the municipal water infrastructure resulted in water consumption exceeding supply. This was confirmed by Clr. Kobus van der Merwe who also attended the meeting. Among other things this caused no water being available in the upper parts of the village for days at a time during the first half of November. Fortunately, residents have exclusive access to four 10 000ℓ water tanks on the property due to the foresight of a previous Management Committee.

An urgent appeal was made to residents to conserve water by not using their garden hoses and/or sprinkler systems to water their gardens until further notice.
